Yingling Looks to Increase Government Transparency

02/19/2015

Advancing his fight to bring transparency to government, state Rep. Sam Yingling, D- Grayslake, recently introduced legislation to ensure local government websites feature information about public meeting notices.
“If we are going to ensure that government is open and honest, every public body must make information easily accessible to anyone and everyone,” Yingling said. “By requiring all public bodies with websites to have their meeting information online, it will help taxpayers keep watch on how their tax dollars are being spent.”
House Bill 1323 amends the Open Meetings Act by requiring public entities that use third party sub-contractors to maintain their websites to post meeting notices and meeting minutes on their websites. This language will replace the current language in the Open Meetings Act that does not require sub-contractors to post the meeting information.
“Every public body should be transparent in the business they conduct, and information should be easily attainable,” Yingling said. “The proliferation of the internet has provided much-needed avenues for transparency and increased accountability in government. I will continue doing what I can to make sure taxpayers have access to information about decisions that impact them.”
